Huayhuash Trek 11D / 10 N Huaraz Peru
In the midst of Huascaran National Park we start our hike by visiting
the Llanganuco valley, hiking through mountain valleys with impressive
views of fluted ice faces and knife edged ridges of the highest
tropical range, including Mt. Alpamayo catalogued as the most
beautiful mountain in the world. We pass colorful villages as we skirt
glacial lakes, high altitude wetlands, screen slopes and imposing
views of a unique panorama, whose worthy scenic rival is the Himalaya.
Day 01.- Lima - Huaraz
Day 02.- Huaraz - Matacancha
After an early morning breakfast, private transfer to the small
isolated town of Chiquian and from there onto Llamac. From here the
first section of the Huayhuash trek begins climbing up to Pocpa and to
your first campsite at Matacancha. Matacancha is located at 4100m.
From here you can appreciate Ninashanca 5607m, and Rondoy 5870m.
Overnight camping.
Day 03.- Matacancha - Cacanan Punta pass - Mitucocha Lake - Llanama Pass
- Carhuacocha Lake
After breakfast you start the ascending trek by the Cordillera's east
side. After a steep descent, you will cross a vast plain before
reaching the Mitococha Lake. In the background, you have the huge
amphitheatre made of the northern sides of Jirishjanca and the Rondoy
mountains. Camping in Carhuacocha. Opportunity to do some fishing.
Day 04.- Carhuacocha - Huayhuash
All day ascending trek to Huayhuash. Campsite in Huayhuash (4350m).
Day 5: Huayhuash - Huayhuash Pass - Viconga
Today is a long hiking day for about 8 hours. You will trek by a wide
pass surrounded by many beautiful lakes. An easy ascent to the
Huayhuash pass at 4750m places you on the eastern slope of the
Cordillera, on the exact division point between the Pacific and
Atlantic basins. An easy descent to the Lake Viconga follows. Campsite
in Viconga.
Day 05.- Osoruri - Jancarurish
An easier day today as you will trek along the valley floor to
Jancarurish 4300m. This beautiful turquoise glacial lake nestles
beneath Alpamayo and the adjacent peaks of Jancarurish 5780, Tayapampa
5860 and Quitaraju 6254m. Camp by the lake shore.
Day 06.- Jancarurish - Huillca
Today, the expedition travels to Safuna lagoon, which should be
reached after a 4 hour hike. You will then climb up to a rocky pass to
4830m which is known as Cara Cara before descending to a rocky ground
and arrive at a grassy valley called Mesa Pampa. There will be a high
chance of seeing condors today. Once at the camp, there will be
opportunities to explore the surrounding lagoons of Low Safuna and
High Safuna.
Day 07.- Huillca - Jancapampa
After breakfast you will follow the pass to Salctaycocha at 4600m. You
then continue more easily into a rocky valley with a scattering of
quenual trees. Follow the valley down to the still waters of
Salctaycocha Lagoon and continue along into the broad Jancapampa
valley.
Day 08.- Jancapampa - Pomabamba
Today is the last day and you will pass several small villages before
reaching Pomabamba. From here you will be met and picked up by prívate
bus for the transfer back to Huaraz.
Day 09.- Huaraz - Lima
