Frequently Asked Questions – Huayhuash Trek
How difficult is the Huayhuash Trek?
Each day of the trek involves a moderate to challenging hike with significant elevation gain. We will spend every night above 4,000m / 13,123 ft and reach as high as 5,020m / 16,469 ft during the day. The combination of long hiking days and high altitude makes this trek physically demanding, but incredibly rewarding.
How much weight will I carry daily?
You’ll only need to carry your daypack (under 5 kg / 11 lbs) with essentials such as water, sunblock, rain gear, a light down jacket, snacks, and personal items. All other belongings will be packed in a duffel bag provided by Inca Land Adventures and transported by our support team and pack animals directly to each campsite.
How many miles will we hike each day?
Expect to walk 8–11 miles (13–18 km) per day, usually taking 5–9 hours, depending on the terrain and elevation gain.
Should I take acetazolamide (Diamox) for altitude?
This is a medical decision—please consult with your doctor before traveling. Some trekkers complete the route without medication, but since we reach altitudes over 16,400 ft (5,000m), there’s no way to predict how your body will respond. Diamox typically takes 24–48 hours to be effective, so plan ahead if your physician recommends it.
Is it safe to travel in Peru?
Yes. Peru is considered one of the safest destinations in South America for travelers, and locals are welcoming and friendly. However, as in any country, use standard precautions: keep an eye on your belongings, avoid poorly lit areas at night, and travel responsibly.
What is the weather like on the Huayhuash Trek?
Weather in the Cordillera Huayhuash is relatively consistent year-round. Expect warm days (70–75°F / 21–24°C) and cold nights (30–40°F / -1–4°C). The mountains can be unpredictable, so packing layers, a quality rain jacket, and warm clothing is essential.
When is the best time to hike the Huayhuash Trek?
The best trekking season is from April to November, during Peru’s dry season, when skies are clearer, trails are more stable, and views of the snow capped Andes are at their best.
