Day 2: Chuncho Macaw Claylick Ethnobotanical Walk Caiman Search

Rise at 4:30 AM for the highlight of your Amazon wildlife tour—the Chuncho Macaw Claylick, one of the best wildlife spectacles in Peru. A 60-minute upstream boat ride through Tambopata National Reserve offers prime Amazon wildlife spotting opportunities.

At the claylick, witness hundreds of parrots and macaws (scarlet, blue-and-yellow, and red-and-green) gathering to eat mineral-rich clay—an essential Amazon conservation success story. Enjoy breakfast while observing this colorful display.

Midday: River Wildlife & Lodge Relaxation

Return via the Tambopata River wildlife route, scanning for tapirs, monkeys, and with luck—jaguars. Afternoon options include hammock relaxation, swimming in the Tambopata River, or piranha fishing (250+ fish species inhabit these waters).

Afternoon: Ethnobotanical Walk

Join our 1km ethnobotanical trail to learn about medicinal plants of the Amazon, walking palms, sacred lupuna trees, and ant-inhabited hollow trees. Discover how indigenous communities use rainforest resources sustainably.

Night: Caiman Search

Board the boat at nightfall for a nocturnal caiman spotting expedition, using spotlights to find these ancient predators along the riverbanks.

Day 3: Sandoval Lake Expedition | Puerto Maldonado

Morning: Transfer to Puerto Maldonado

After breakfast, boat and vehicle transfer to Puerto Maldonado hotel for room relaxation and lunch.

Afternoon: Sandoval Lake Adventure

Cruise the Madre de Dios River for 30 minutes, then hike 3km through secondary forest to Sandoval Lake—an oxbow lake teeming with Amazon wildlife. Board a canoe for lake paddling, observing:

• Giant river otters (highly endangered, resident family)

• Hoatzins (prehistoric-looking birds)

• Kingfishers, herons, and egrets

• Howler and squirrel monkeys

Sunset marks our return hike and river cruise back to Puerto Maldonado. Evening free to enjoy the hotel pool with waterfall or explore town nightlife.
